What is the difference between the Original Formula and Retinavites II?
Following the publication of the 2013 AREDS II trial and the recommendations of the AREDS II investigators, we have eliminated beta-carotene and replaced it with lutein and zeaxanthin, which are alternate carotenoids that do not increase the risk of lung cancer.
Additionally, we have reduced the concentration of zinc from 80mg to 25mg since there was no difference in the AREDS II trial between these two concentrations in terms of Macular Degeneration risk reduction.
Since there is no beta-carotene in the new formula, Retinavites II can be taken by smokers and non-smokers alike.

Will Retinavites or any supplement actually cure Macular Degeneration?
No. While the AREDS study found that the vitamin and mineral formula found in Retinavites was effective in slowing the progression of Macular Degeneration, there is no current evidence that this or any other vitamin and mineral formula will work proactively to cure Macular Degeneration.
Are there other products similar to Retinavites II?
There are several vitamin brands on the market manufactured according to the AREDS study formula. Retinavites provides the recommended daily dosage of vitamins and minerals in 2 pills, while others may require up to FOUR pills a day. There are also significant cost differences among national brands. While Retinavites retail for $25-$35 for a three-month supply, other brands can sell for as high as $50 a bottle.
Can I take Retinavites II in addition to my current vitamins?
Because Retinavites contain a large amount of vitamins A (found in the Original Non-Smoker), C, and E, it may not be advisable for you to continue taking your current regimen of vitamins at the same time you are taking Retinavites. Patients should always consult their physician to discuss whether or not they should take other vitamins at the same time.
Will Retinavites II interfere with other medications?
High doses of vitamin E may interfere with blood thinners such as Coumadin. Always discuss with your doctor prior to starting any new supplements like Retinavites. While none of the patients followed in the National Eye Institute study had any serious problems as a result of taking the AREDS formula vitamins, it is always a good idea to check with your physician before adding additional vitamin supplements to your daily vitamin regimen.
